90 Day: The Other Way Proves It's The Best Of The Spin-offs
90 Day: The Other Way Recap - S04 E01 - To Love And Be Wise Is Impossible
Howdy, pals! Sadly, Vulture doesn’t have the budget to follow another 90 Day Fiancé spin-off for another season. Absolutely fair, who can even keep up anymore? But I want to keep covering The Other Way here because this is the most exciting new group of participants the show has had in years! Everyone is new (technically, if you watched Love in the Caribbean, you met Daniele and Yohan). This has always been my favorite spin-off because it’s the most diverse.
The Other Way brought us our first 90 Day gay couple and now it’s giving us our first WLW couple and trans partner! In a way that isn’t exploitative or gross! TOW has always been good about engaging with the different social standards participants face. Gabriel, from Florida, is headed to Colombia to be with his fiancé, Isabel. Gabriel is a trans man who has his own business. He currently lives in Florida where he has trouble finding community. I like TOW because it allows us to see how far this country is from the American dream. Gabriel has found more acceptance in Colombia than he has in "the land of the free” (or, well, Florida, at least).
Isabel and her kids completely accepts Gabriel, but her parents don’t know he’s trans. It feels like they’re truly in love, but that could be a problem. We don’t know Isabel yet, but I hope she’s the type to stand by her man because Gabriel’s sister will make fun of him so hard if this doesn’t work out. I loved the scene where his sister is like “Oh, so you’re tattooing ANOTHER woman’s name on you?” Honest siblings are the best.
Kris (from Alabama) and Jeymi (from Colombia) are our next LGBT couple! They’re two women lovin’ ladies who found each other late in life. Kris is moving to Bogota, Colombia and neither seems to have any doubts. Kris’ kids point out that she might not like how Jeymi sleeps or eats. Jeymi’s friends point out that she might not feel the same spark in person. All things we’ve seen before on the show! It also doesn’t help that Jeymi briefly cheated on Kris after they had some issues. AND on top of that, Kris has narcolepsy and hasn’t been completely honest with Jeymi about how it impacts her life. Basically…I think these two are gonna bring the drama.
Daniele and Yohan are already bringing the drama. Hell, they already brought the drama in Love in the Caribbean! I’m honestly shocked that they’re still together. They never made sense as a couple and seemed to fight constantly. Daniele wised up to the fact that Yohan was using her to get to America and flipped the game by moving to the Dominican Republic. The thing is…she hasn’t told Yohan what she’s up to yet. Yohan doesn’t speak English and Daniele conveniently slips into English every time she explains that she isn’t filing his visa to come to America.
He clearly doesn’t understand what’s going on and she’s taking advantage of him. She’s one of those people who uses sage and words like “emotional healing” to manipulate those around her! Eventually, Yohan is gonna figure out that the Dominican Republic is Daniele’s long term plan and I don’t think he’s gonna stick with her after that.
There’s also Jen and Rishi, respectively from Oklahoma and India. Obviously, they remind me of Sumit and Jenny. Yes, because of their large age gap, but also because Rishi’s parents do not know about Jen. They think she’s just a friend! GIRL! We saw how that went for Sumit, don’t do this! Don’t start your relationship on a lie! Anyway, everyone in Jen’s life is telling her she’s making a mistake, maybe she’ll change her mind (probably not.)
Finally, there’s Nicole (Cali) and Mahmoud (Egypt). I already CANNOT with these two. We haven’t even met Mahmoud yet, but Nicole is absolutely the type who moves to another country and is like “omg, I didn’t realize I’d have to like…be around another culture.” Mahmoud proposed to her on the first day they met! They got married without telling her family! Nicole is clearly trying to live out some fantasy and Mahmoud thinks he can make her into the woman he wants. This will be drama!
There’s also Debbie and Oussama, a Georgia/Morocco pair with a large age gap. We haven’t met them yet, though, so…we’ll see about the drama there.
It’s kinda weird how many names match older participants this season. Do you think the casting director was like “I need another Jenny, another Debbie, let’s go!”? Probably not. Anyway, I’m excited for this season!
TV Quick Hits
Head on over to the Patreon for a special TV, I Say episode where I talk about Velma, The Last of Us and Extraordinary!
Don’t wanna do that? Here are some TV opinion quick hits:
Love Without Borders (Peacock/Bravo) finally ended and what a mess this show was! I had such high hopes it would fill some 90 Day Fiancé hole I felt, but no. The whole thing fell apart. It’s like the matchmaker gave up halfway through the show. The only person who found love was the person who left his match and went on his own dates! Everyone else split up. Oh well!
American Auto (Peacock/NBC) is back!!! And just as funny as ever, damn it! I need you all to watch this because if it gets cancelled, I’ll never forgive you.
How I Met Your Father (Hulu) I don’t know why I’m watching this, but I am. They did the electric slide in an episode and I do not know why they did that. I guess we’re even.
Shrinking (AppleTV) Jason Segel is sad and we’re watching it!
Extraordinary (Hulu) I talked about this one in the extra ep, but this show is so good, I’m saying it again here. I stayed up until 4am watching it!
Night Court (Peacock/NBC) I didn’t watch the original, but this reboot makes me believe the multi-cam sitcom isn’t dead.
I will NOT be giving Netflix my money with all this “no sharing passwords” nonsense, nuh uh, not me!
They cancelled Reboot and now Hulu is my enemy.
Welcome to Flatch (Fox/Hulu) Sometimes I forget this show has new episodes, then I have a few to watch and it’s a great time catching up. I really love season two!!
Sex Before the Internet (Vice/Hulu) This doc series randomly started playing and I really like it! It’s gritty, funny and actually taught me some things. I think I could start a sex phone line. Also, my favorite Zach Noe Towers is in it!
Who’s on the Pod this Week????
IMANI HAKIM! From Mythic Quest and Everybody Hates Chris! We talk about both! I absolutely loved that they had Imani’s character take the lead in the newest season and her chemistry with Rob McElhenney is ELECTRIC. It’s also a whole lot of improv!
Also, my mom joins to talk about Poker Face! She is obsessed with that show:
