**This edition is TV spoiler free! But, basically, I am still tweeting about absolutely nothing.**
Well. This is my newsletter where I usually write about what I’m tweeting about, but you might’ve noticed I’m not really tweeting about anything right now. My account got suspended because I made a pretty okay joke where I pretended to be Trump and said he meant to say he won an erection. Of course, I knew my account would be suspended for this, so this break was by design.
I also thought it was funny that my account could get suspended for falsely presenting a tweet that twitter had to put a warning on for being false. Also, lol, erection.
But mostly, omg, I’m so busy right now you guys, I still have so much stuff I need to finish and write and do!! I don’t know if my account will ever come back. Twitter told me to consider a new one (and my managers say people will forget me if I don’t exist on Twitter in some way) so there is my alt:
@arayyay, but in terms of my productivity, this is for the best right now.
I know some people miss my tweets, but that’s not really what you want anyway! I mean, I have an Instagram and this newsletter if you need random looks into my life, but what you really want are:
My TV recommendations!
My interviews with people like Seth Rogen and Roxane Gay on 90 Day Fiancé on my podcast, TV, I Say. That episode is on Patreon NOW, and will be available on the podcast tomorrow (subscribe now).
You want to listen to my old podcast interviews with people like Nicco Annan and Jack Moore!
You also want to read/listen to the books/audiobooks I’m writing and editing. I co-edited You are (A Comedy) Special for Maria Bamford and was ranked one of the best of the year by Audible! I’m writing weekly 90 Day Fiancé recaps for season 8 on Vulture! I also have multiple pieces on the way I can’t talk about yet!
But, basically, I have a lot of not-Twitter things going on right now and I hope you’ll join me for them, including this newsletter.
As you can see, I’ve changed the vibes around here accordingly. Welcome to my semi-newish newsletter that is kind of the same thing, but better!
What else have I been watching?
Here’s all the TV I watched if you don’t want to listen to my podcast about all the TV I watch.
Saturday Night Live - Jason Bateman did his best. I loved the Eminem Stan digital short though.
How to with John Wilson - Again, another BRILLIANT show that I’m happy got a 2nd season.
Industry - I am SO ANGRY this show got a second season! I dedicated an entire intro on my podcast to this show making me ANGRY.
The Flight Attendant - This show irritates me and proves George from Grey’s Anatomy is a horrible actor.
Grey’s Anatomy - Meredith has COVID and it shouldn’t be funny, but it is.
90 Day Fiancé - Season 8 premiered and I’m recapping for Vulture!
Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults, The Reagans, Murder on Middle Beach - We can finally all agree a perfect documentary is four episodes with this trifecta right here. We all know Seduced started this wave though.
I’m exhausted and the end of the year is coming up, but I haven’t gotten a single moment to rest. I turned 30 on November 28th and it’s like I hit the track I was always meant to be on. As anyone who knows me knows, I was born to be in my 30s.
My natural state is nestled in a blanket dress (I refuse to call this a Slanket, it is DIFFERENT) watching Hoarders while ghosting events I said I might go to. Instead of buying the latest Fenty products for my birthday, I invested in planners and wall calendars and organizing stickers.
I’ve always been a secret stationary freak, but now, at 30, I can let it out. I can show the world.
So, amidst all this business, I’m thankful to have more certainty around who I am and what I want and what I’ve accomplished. There’s plenty of time for Year End wrap ups and all that nostalgic mess I will definitely be engaging in, but I do feel like I can look back on an incredible decade in my life and be happy despite things that upset me:
Being poly is still ridiculous and it doesn’t really matter because I’m not leaving my house right now anyway.
Earlier today I got incredibly angry on Instagram when I found this white astrologist who is selling natal chart readings for $2,000.
Also the season premiere of Shameless was so bad it gave me anxiety.
That reminds me: the new season of Big Mouth is the best they’ve done yet. Of course, I’m biased because it features Maria Bamford, but watching it really did help with the unending anxiety this quarantine has caused!
I loved the debut of Ayo Edebiri as Missy!
But I do wish they’d let her say “nigger” when Ayo took over the role!
I also want to call out the Lena Dunham joke in one of the episodes as being PARTICULARLY hilarious.
If you haven’t watched yet or if you haven’t been a fan of the show in the past, try this season. I admit, I’m not a huge fan of gross out humor and I struggle with parts of the show, but I stick with it and love it because it has heart.
The finale of Murder on Middle Beach broke my heart and we are all that guy’s mom now. We all must adopt him as a collective. I demand it.
I’ve been watching so many cult documentaries and I want to dedicate a cult to this woman. She is in every single one. She knows her cults:
Oh yeah, I also watched the new Animaniacs for my birthday while on a lot of acid. I enjoyed it? Yeah! I enjoyed it. It was amazing to me how relevant the show still was and how desperately it made me want to seek the safe embrace of my childhood.
Anyway, I have to spend the next three weeks hiding in my bedroom until I have multiple drafts of things completed. I want to start 2021 without any old deadlines or projects hanging over me, y’know? But also, the world is ending, so I keep eating Lunchables for dinner (I’m depressed) and I am living in a blanket dress.
So, I’m thankful for things that cheer me up like doing this newsletter and my podcast and watching TV.
Also, I have a Patreon for my weekly podcast you can support, which gets you:
Early access to things like the previously mentioned Seth Rogen/Roxane Gay interview.
Transcripts of every episode!
Lists of the TV shows I recommend.
The ability to watch shows with me and tell me what shows to write about.
“But Ashley, I don’t listen to podcasts, I loved your TWITTER, I like to READ! What about me? What additional content can I CONSUME?”
Well, I know at times I’ve neglected this newsletter, but it was only because I was getting my super dope podcast up and running. Look at what a good fucking job I did, huh?
Nicco Annan? Roxane Gay? Steven Weber? Seth Rogen? Kenny and Armando? Yeah, top tier content for y’all.
Now, though, I have time to turn this newsletter into the TV-obsessed trash rag y’all want it to be and because of that:
I’m offering paid subscriptions.
Did you guys ever read Videogum? This is going to be like Videogum but in your inbox and by me.
You’ll get 1 email every Tuesday and Friday and access to:
Special interviews
Reviews by Request (make me watch whatever you want, I write about it)
If you support the Patreon, this is already included in your membership!
Subscribe now and get 20% off for a year ($4 a month/$40 a year!!).
Anyway, the Friday edition will still be FREE, so I still have something for everyone if you don’t want to support black women in television and podcasting.
I guess that’s it. Maybe share this so people know why I disappeared? Thanks!
