Wow, it’s been awhile! Honestly, I’ve been busy: Shows, touring, quitting my day job, writing, etc. But, I’ve decided to change up the formatting of this newsletter so I can provide you with three wonderful editions every week while keeping podcast content on Patreon (season 2 premiering in August)!
This newsletter will now feature:
The Monday Night Social Post - That is what this is! I watch a lot of TV over the weekend. I’m sure you do too! I’ll be sharing my weekend watchlist and thoughts every Monday so we can talk about it. I won’t include spoilers and if you comment with spoilers, please use a warning! But, wow, what do you all think of White Lotus???
The Wednesday Watch List - Wednesday is when I prepare my weekend TV watch list, so I’ll give you all my recommendations and let you know what’s coming out.
Hot Take Friday - Did we ever get that girl from Bridgerton her jizz? Why is You, Me and My Ex so addictive? What’s going on with the second season of Dave? These will be more in-depth overall cultural pieces on whatever nonsense I’m watching at the moment.
Sound good?? Great! You can get all of the above by subscribing for free (if you pay, you’ll get access to all the Patreon goodies in addition to this newsletter):
Ok, let’s dive into the Monday Night Social Post!
Here’s all the TV I watched this weekend (not including 3 separate Bar Rescue marathons):
Darcey & Stacey (TLC) - The real reason I restarted my newsletter this week is because one of my favorite couples from 90 Day Fiancé is back and I need to talk about it: Darcey and Stacey. The first season of Darcey & Stacey was TLC’s highest premiering shows and season two delivers right from the jump. Is one of them sobbing and breaking down within 2 minutes of the first episode? Absolutely. Darcey and Stacey still exist within their own bubble as their family simply tries to exist around them. They’ve both settled for men who are keeping secrets and don’t appreciate them, but maybe this will be the season Darcey gets the wedding she deserves (or Stacey makes her jealous by throwing the wedding she always wanted).
Gossip Girl (HBO Max) - I do not understand the premise of this reboot, but I’m watching. I feel like it would be great if you removed the teachers and then just made a brand new show about the kids.
Ted Lasso (Apple+) - You already know Ted Lasso is back because I won’t stop tweeting about it! I got to see the first two episodes at the premiere and it truly is as good as everyone says it is. Two moments made me sob. It’s also some of the most clever writing on TV.
White Lotus (HBO Max) - This show has everything I love: Steve Zahn, Steve Zahn’s dick and balls, Steve Zahn drunk. I am obsessed with it and I wish they’d just let us binge it. I like the mystery aspect, but I don’t feel a need to guess where things are going to go. Mike White is simply a genius who knows how to make good TV from various perspectives. It reminds me a bit of Enlightened.
Black Monday (Showtime) - There’s one episode left for the season and I’m sad I haven’t seen more people talking about this show every week. It has been fucking killing it. Episode 9 was perhaps one of the best they’ve ever done. The show has found a great ensemble rhythm and is making use of it.
Flatbush Misdemeanors (Showtime) - Goddamn it, I love this show. It is so funny. There is one line every episode that makes me fall to the floor. It’s a great translation of dry, alt comedy translated to TV. Also Maria Bamford is in it and Roy Wood Jr.!
Kevin Can F*** Himself (AMC) - I’ve been enjoying this show so much, I paid for AMC+ so I can watch the episodes early. I love everything about it and can’t wait to see where it goes. I love the show so much, I actually haven’t watched the finale yet because I am trying to make it last longer.
Why Women Kill (Paramount+) - I haven’t really been enjoying season 2, but it’s fun and campy enough. The first season had a real Desperate Housewives-vibe that I loved, but season two has focused on the women as villains. It’s kind of working.
Sexy Beasts (Netflix) - This is the dating show where people wear masks that everyone thought was a twitter joke. It’s real! I watched it all and honestly, it’s not as interesting as the previews made it seem. The show wants to be about people connecting on a personal level, but the main focus of every episode is the face reveal and then all the contestants react to confirm whether the person is hot or not. Personality doesn’t matter at all, since most contestants just hope they picked someone hot in the end. The Panda Bear episode is the best if you want to give it a shot.
90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? (TLC) - Go read my take on Vulture!
Did you watch any of these shows? Did you watch anything else? Tell me about it!
Ashley, do you think it's time to name this new wave of older comedic movie actresses on TV? I'm thinking Jean Smart, Catherine O'Hara, & Jennifer Coolidge. Wish my dad were around to see all his favorite ladies get the screen time they deserve! Also is it reasonable to hope that the renewed interest in "the nanny" will get us a new Fran Drescher vehicle?
oooh have been waiting for ur Kevin Can Fuck Himself take!
